Sliding into the void, 2020

All photos in Limited Edition of 9 + 2AP. Fine art print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Pearl paper, 40x60cm.

Photos that make up this body of work were taken in Milan, on March 8, 2020, a date that will remain in history as the beginning of the expansion of the restrictive measures relating to the Covid-19 pandemic in Italian territory, from single quarantine ‘red zones’ of municipalities to the regions and, subsequently, to the whole peninsula. In an atmosphere of surreal emptiness, that just before seemed impossible, I recorded images of urban spaces and people crossing the center of Milan, surrounded by architectures of closed buildings. Forms emptied of their contents, theaters, museums and schools, deprived of their functions. These difficult days have stimulated reflection on how vulnerable, and therefore precious, our culture is. The blur technique used in different ways helped me to underline the concept of fragility, the feeling of instability and tension determined by this situation.
